Buying a new cow?

Here are some of the factors to consinder

Agriculture is the backbone of the economy they say. And it sure is. We all need to eat to live. The food we eat comes from the animals we rear and plants we grow. Without Agriculture, all the other sectors are weak and not sustainable.

But wait. What about agribusiness? But what is the difference?

When a farmer practices for food, that is agriculture. When they practice for money, thats agribusiness. Its the simplest explanation.

Nowadays, not many people do agriculture. We need to make money to make ends meet. And that is where dairy farming comes in. You produce milk for business.

So this was your idea? Well, its valid. You can make alot of money in dairy farming like many farmers are doing. But still, without the right knowledge, you are in for a hard time. It might push you to point of regrets. But here are some few tips to help you in choosing a good cow for business.

  • Production

The amount of milk a cow produces determines your return on investiment, which must be your number one intention. There being cows that can produce more than 50 litres and others from one litre in a day, its your responsibility to set a goal so that you are able to choose the amount of milk you need from a cow to make profit.

  • Price

Now that you have a figure of the expected production, how much do you need to put in to purchase that cow. Depending on breed, age, lactation status, number of births and so on, you will get a good cow for the amount of cash you have.

  • Age

I have already listed it above with its other combinations. The age of a cow will determine its number of births, lactation status, and future predictability. A younger cow will be more promising than an older one. A young cow will have more births, and hence more profit. A young cow has higher chances of improvement than an older one. The younger the better.

  • Health

It is of no importance to have a young, cheap and high producer cow, but then its not healthy. Some of the health conditions that no one will tell you about when selling a cow are lack of teeth, not swallowing the chewed cud, infertility, among others that are not easily visible. Your inteligence or atleast knowledge in such will save you the headache of dealing with an unhealthy cow.

  • Feeding

Depending on your plan, it is always advisable to buy a cow from areas where or owners who feed cows on almost the similar types are you are going to use. If you are buying from areas they are used to nappier grass and packed feeds, then that is what you are surposed to continue feeding. If they are used to freerange grazing, its a point to consider. Failure to observe such can lead to disapointment in production and/or animal health. Some areas are also prone to some deseases while some are not, and temparature also has negative or positive effects on sudden changes.

  • Breed

I wont emphisize much on breed. This is a personal preference. Some people adore certain breeds out of experience, others dislike some out of no valid point. Nevertheless, there are some breeds that are high yielders, and others that are quality yeielders. Depending on your research and/or your previous preference, you can be able to choose a breed that will be best for you.

There being 1001 tips to consider, these are just but a drop in the ocean, but it will go a long way in helping you make the right decision.

The Painful CRB Blacklist Revisited

In the recent past, Kenyans have suffered the negative effects of being listed on the credit reference bureau even for kshs 1000 or less in loan default. This denied youths chances for employment and loan facilities.

However, borrowers defaulting on loans of less than Sh5 million will not be blacklisted at the credit reference bureaus (CRBs) while those already blacklisted will be dropped in a bid to cushion businesses recovering from Covid-19 hardships.
President Uhuru Kenyatta Wednesday announced the suspension of CRB listing for loans that were defaulted from last October and the relief from blacklisting will last to September 2022
The CRB listing relief is part of a stimulus package to cushion distressed businesses and families from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, which have hit consumer demand and forced businesses to shed jobs and cut back their operations.
Borrowers reported to one of Kenya’s three credit bureaux, got their chances of being able to borrow more.
